Grief, Mourning & Bereavement


Grief:                Is the emotional response to loss.

Mourning:             The process where by we through the loss, regaining 
                      a sense of balance and integration in our own 
                      lives.  Mourning is a function necessity not a 
                      weakness; it is a form of healing.  We need to create 
                      the opportunities for families to be able to share 
                      their needs with so we can help them.

Bereavement:          Describes the event of loss--of death itself.

Chart of Critical Time Intervals
24-48 hours           The impact of reality hits.
5-7 days Mild depressive reaction; feeling of "let down".
6-8 weeks Most difficult adjustment period; the impact of the loss hits with acute symptoms of anxiety and depression:
      1. loss of sleep
      2. over eating or lack of appetite
      3. weeping
      4. fatigue
      5. tremors
      6. anxiety, panic
      7. acute moods swings
      8. decreased ability to concentrate and remember, confusion and frustration
      9. loss of sex drive or desire
Around		      Irritability and complaining
   3 months           physical and verbal acting out of anger, tears
                      physical complaints such as headaches, backaches, 
                      diarrhea, ect.

Around
   6 months           Depression

Around                Mild recurrent depression associated with 
   12 months          anniversary of the loss; also occurs on special dates 
                      such as birthdays, holidays.
         
         

Around     
12-18-24 months       Acceptance and resolution of the grief.

Remember each person is unique and will respond as such. This above is the guideline, they can vary with each person.
